The Votussoloum - matte painting

this is my entry for the CGTantra matte painting challenge:
won first place in the challenge, the forum is at this link:
http://www.cgtantra.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19267

Essentially the challenge set by Philip Straub was to create something that aligned with his description as follows:

Votussoloum : (vo-chu-su-lo-um) It is here, amidst the towering fires of hatred, the concept of war was born. Beginning as nothing more than a seed of negative thought The Votussoloum fed on the Utherworlds unyielding desire for control and power. Each unique tale of war from the corners of the universe is destined to repeat itself within the Votussoloum, over and over. Every skirmish, every conflict, every battle, and every war, at some point in time, has been fought here. These re-enactments help the hateful emotions to grow stronger, every horror fuelling the next, each clash increasing the severity of battles fought in the Utherworlds. The flames of war reach countless feet into a shape shifting sky with purpose, eventually channeling their energy through to the other side. For as far as the eye can see fire consumes and destroys one civilization after another, a replacement always waiting in the shadows.

So i tried to use some darker and cool foreground elements, and push the atmosphere a little adding some slightly warmer elements like the mid ground red scattering of flowers.
the key to this one was the composition for me, so attempted to use the bridge railing as a visual lead for the eye.
Hopefully its ambiguous in a subtle way, is she waiting for him or waiting in ambush. Added the sword behind her to suggest she is not all hugs and kisses.
Contemplated showing her hand reaching for the sword, but decided not to spoon feed the viewer.
hope you like.

The initial idea was to create a camouflaged tank that emulated its environment a little, also wanted it slightly futuristic but only close future, so still a believable mechanical design.
I struggled a lot with the idea of putting a cab with a drivers window on a tank, was originally much bigger, but have edited the design a lot as i painted it.

This is a quick render i set up.
modelled in Maya. rendered in hypershot and some post texture in photoshop.
basically i wanted to test hypershot, so quickly took the entire model in there (all as one component), added one material to everything and rendered then textured afterwards in photoshop.
I instantly fell in love with hypershot - its true gravy for anyone that is has a phobia for making nice renders in a program like maya. Only took about 15 minutes, and that was my very first use of Hypershot.
so my plan now is to make a new version of this, by taking a full version of the model - plan to add different materials to each part for the render - as every pin and bolt is a seperate object in the full model. hopefully this will make a much more realistic render.
welcome any crits.
i highly reccomend hypershot - its pretty darn awesome !

the first is retro styled imagery - specifically those type of posters and propaganda artwork from the 1940s and around WW2. The second is old aircraft, in this case a spitfire, and the third thing was ladies in suspender belts - everyone likes them....don't they :-)
So yes, basically my goal was to try and emulate that retro art feel, maybe make it look a little bit like something off the lid of an old biscuit tin?
my favorite part in terms of composition was how positioning her on the bonnet, with leg resting on the exhaust, seemed to work well, also tried to have her head breaking through the cloud line to give her significance.
This is my entry For the NVIDIA Surreal art challenge.
I started with the idea of an iceberg that melts into the foreground turning into a wave. i wanted to try and get lots of movement happening.
Without getting too deep about it, I wanted to try and portray global warming in a way that shows humans taking a ride on mother earth. She is trying to keep the balance while we are harvesting and going for a ride on her - which is why i choose a lemon tree - lemons being a bitter fruit.
I also tried to reflect the lines/movement from the ground into the smog cloud that eminated from the iceberg factory.
Anyway, I said I wouldn't get too deep about it, so will stop there :-)
a final thought - I found that there's a fine line between composition and clutter with these kind of images, not sure if I crossed that line, but welcome any comments.

oil painting - mount egmont

something a little different - this is a commissioned oil painting.
1.5 metres wide.
I painted about 95% of this using only a palette knife, then a small brush for dabs to do the seed heads on the grasses.
synthetic oils on canvas.
Digital photo dosnt really do it justice, as the paint is very thickly applied with the knife, and is very textural up close, you can see the mounds of oil paint.
probably my favorite way to paint, kind of like spreading butter, lots of fun.
depicts mount egmont national park in new zealand.
comments welcomed.

another one in a series for print publication for young boys.

this one almost drove me crazy, soo much happening in there, the composition was a nightmare, as such when i zoom in, i still see some areas that could use work, but its one of the trade-offs with trying to call a piece finished in time for the client i guess.

Overall im happiest with the composition, personally.

I tried to use painter a little more than usual in this one.
I plan to try and get to a point where i spend at least half my time in Painter.
have to keep reminding myself to close photoshop for a while, and get back in painter.
